Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points on the surface of the skin, acupuncture points, that have the ability to change biochemical and physiological conditions in the body. Sensory receptor neurons respond to the needle stimuli and transmit sensory information to the central nerve system. The information is processed by the brain and the brain send output signals to muscles or glands. For muscle pain, acupuncture on the area stimulates nerves that transmit impulses to the hypothalamic-pituitary system in the brain. The hypothalamus-pituitary glands secrete neurotransmitters and endorphins, the body's natural pain-killing hormones. The chemical substances secreted as a result of acupuncture relax the body and alleviate the pain, and also regulate serotonin in the brain, which affects emotional states. Acupuncture regulates the nervous system, which is comprised of two systems, the sympathetic system (the fight-or-fight response) and the parasympathetic system (the rest-and-digest activities). The latter is activate when the body is at rest, which affects digestive and reproductive system. This is why acupuncture is effective in treating pain, IBS and infertility. Other effects include increased blood circulation, decreased inflammation, relief of muscle spasms and increased T-cell count, which affects the immune system.
Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years, showing that one thin needle can change you.
